For our latest Inspire session, we looked at goals and aspirations, and how reality can sometimes go against our expectations. Through games like an aspiration-themed ‘Snakes and Ladders’, the group explored what goes into pursuing goals, and that it is okay if things don’t go to plan, or if their aspirations change. Last week, our Facing the Future group took learned about the Jewish festivals of Rosh Hashanah and Yon Kippur. With the former happening last Friday and the latter upcoming, the group took the time to learn about the meaning and customs of these festivals, which mark the Jewish New Year and holiest day respectively. This included eating honey and apples for a sweet new year, making a new year’s plan, and exploring Tashlich, a symbolic ritual of leaving things like bad habits behind to create a better year. Exploring the cultures and practices of others is important for building understanding, kindness, and respect for everyone in our community. We’re glad to help young people expand their understanding of other cultures, and we’re proud of our young people for taking the time to immerse themselves. For National Food Bank Day last week, our Inspire group took the session to understand the cost of food and give back to those less fortunate. After a quiz that revealed how much food and other everyday items actually cost, the group split into teams to gather food for The Bridge: Homelessness to Hope. Each team was only given £25 to spend, encouraging them to make thoughtful decisions on what to buy with a limited budget. Young people had to create a shopping list of what to buy, comparing prices at local stores to find the best prices. Then they headed out to buy each item for themselves. Great work to everyone that took part! We’ll be sending what our young people bought to The Bridge soon. After not being able to visit the allotment since the Summer Scheme, it’s safe to say nature has been very busy! The space bacame quite overgrown, but our team got straight to work clearing paths, cutting back weeds, and bringing the allotment back to life. It was a great session full of teamwork, fresh air, and plenty of hard work. A huge well done to everyone involved — the difference is amazing! Our Inspire group visited the Leicester Pride parade last weekend, joining the city in celebrating and showing their support for the LGBTQIA+ community. The parade was full of colour, energy, and positivity, showing the importance of diversity, inclusion, and community, celebrating everyone’s right to be themselves. It was a great opportunity for the group to show support, learn more about Pride, and be part of a welcoming and uplifting community celebration. Events like this help remind us of the importance of acceptance, respect, and standing together. Yesterday was Letter Writing Day! So, our Facing the Future group explored the art of letter-writing. First, they wrote letters to their future-selves, creating written time-capsules and sending themselves kind messages. Then they wrote letters to their friends, families, and each other. It was a great chance to acknowledge how much more meaningful receiving a physical letter is in a world of messaging apps and social media. Last week, our Inspire project group learned all about La Tomatina, a festival in Buñol, Spain, famous for residents throwing tomatoes at each other. First, the group played a quiz that not only explored the festival in detail, but the numerous bizarre yet non-the-less important festivals that exist around the world. Then, young people got to cooking, learning how to make spaghetti al pomodoro (or tomato pasta). Delicious! Yesterday was National Second-Hand Wardrobe Day, so our Facing the Future group explored the benefits of buying clothes 2nd-hand. First, the group discussed the downsides of the clothing industry and “fast-fashion”, exploring its effects on the environment and its long-term cost to buyers. Afterwards, the young people designed their own 2nd-hand fashion brands, upcycling a pile of 2nd-hand clothes using craft-fabric, ribbons and buttons. They even held a fashion-show at the end to showcase their revived apparel. For last week’s weekend session, our Inspire project looked at what it means to foster fairness, equality, and justice in a community. Young people were tasked with creating their own fictional world, trying to make them fair for everyone while juggling a limited budget. Young people had to create their world’s laws, what citizens would be guaranteed, what their world would provide for it’s people. This allowed them to discuss the hurdles communities face when ensuring fairness and equality for everyone. For session two of our movie-making workshops, courtesy of volunteer Dylan, our Inspire group learned about sound-design. Dylan taught our young people how to produce different sound-effects using various objects. The group then took to movie-making programs, recording and adding their own sound effects to a series of short videos. Thanks again to Dylan for teaching our young people new skills. Today we were joined by @freedom4girls, who held a session with our Facing the Future group about period-poverty and the menstrual cycle. The group discussed what period-poverty is, and how social stigma and the cost of living can limit access to period-products and support. They also explored how tracking menstrual cycles can help to understand their energy and emotional levels during each stage, and consequently plan around it. Freedom For Girls ended the session with a safe space for those in the group who experience menstrual cycles to get support. On top of that, they offered free period-protection underwear to those that wanted some. Thanks to Freedom for Girls for giving our young people important knowledge that can either help them during their cycles, or help them to support others that experience them. Today we were joined by @freedom4girls, who held a session with our Facing the Future...

Long-time volunteer, Dylan, once-again joined our Inspire group to deliver another filmography session. In the first of a two-week workshop, he taught the young people about stop-motion animation. The group built characters using pipe cleaners, using them to learn and model different movements. They were then tasked with making a short stop-motion movie using craft materials. From story-boarding their animation, to taking photos of each frame and chaining them together. Thanks again to Dylan for teaching our young people new art and filmography skills. For the FINALE of ‘FOCUS Does Summer 2026’, we headed for our overnight residential at Beaumanor Hall! Our volunteers led a range of activities and reflection sessions, giving young people time to look back on their experiences, achievements and favourite moments from both the residential and the wider Summer Scheme. Day 8 of ‘FOCUS Does Summer 2026’ saw yet another double-feature of activities. We headed to both Treetops Golf and East Street Lanes for games of crazy golf and bowling! Young people navigated the creative crazy golf courses, and showed their skills in friendly bowling tournaments. The group celebrated great shots, encouraged teammates and enjoyed a relaxed day before their big residential-trip finale. Something strange was happening at Abbey Park, on Day 7 of 'FOCUS Does Summer'! FOCUS volunteer Elliot led the young people on a Stranger Things-themed scavenger hunt. Each team followed clues, cracked codes, and solved riddles to save our CEO, Matt, from the Upside Down! Each task required young people to communicate clearly, think creatively and combine their different strengths to unlock the next location and score points for their team. There were plenty of surprises along the way, as well as lots of laughter and determined problem-solving. Week 2 of the FOCUS Summer Scheme began with this year’s FOCUS Big Quiz - featuring our friends from Pepsi Co’s Beaumont Park team. Teams worked together to best each other in a series of tricky questions, with plenty of friendly competition along the way. Following the quiz, young people got the choice to either play sports games or do arts-and-crafts. The mix of activities gave everyone the chance to take part in something they enjoyed, whether that meant solving quiz questions, getting active or expressing their creativity. We wrapped up the first week of the FOCUS Summer Scheme with a Sports Day at Abbey Park. Led by FOCUS volunteer Ellie, young people took part in a range of sports and outdoor games designed for all interests and ability levels. The day gave young people another chance to strengthen the friendships and team spirit that have developed across the first week. It was brilliant to see everyone getting involved, supporting their teammates and enjoying the opportunity to be active outdoors. Teamwork was put to the test on Day 4 of the FOCUS Summer Scheme, with our young people heading to both Laser Quest and the Break Free Escape Room! Laser Quest required quick thinking, communication and strategy. While the escape rooms challenged teams to solve puzzles, search for clues and work together against the clock. There were plenty of exciting moments, surprising discoveries and opportunities for young people to take the lead. For Day 3 of ‘FOCUS Does Summer 2026’, we held our annual FOCUS Pool Tournament at Rack-N-Roll. Young people tested their accuracy, patience and decision-making skills as they competed in matches throughout the day. Additional games and activities meant that everyone could stay involved, socialise and cheer on their teammates while the tournament progressed. It was great to see good sportsmanship across the group, with young people encouraging one another, celebrating each other’s successes and handling the competitive moments positively. Day 2 of ‘FOCUS Does Summer 2026’ was the first of our 2-in-1 activity days....

‘FOCUS Does Summer 2026’ is officially underway! Day 1 kicked-off our summer scheme with a host of introductory team challenges, at the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre. This year’s group of young people got to meet the Summer Scheme staff, volunteers and their new teammates. The day gave everyone the chance to get to know one another, build confidence and begin developing the communication and teamwork skills they will use throughout the next two weeks. It was fantastic to see the teams encouraging each other, getting involved and tackling each challenge together. Our Facing the Future young people put their teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills to the...

For their last session before our Summer Scheme, and in light of the balmy weather the week before, our Inspire group held an ice-cream designing session. Each young person created their own ice-cream brand, with their own signature ice-cream flavour for our judges (the project staff) to try. They even designed logos, and conducted their own brand research to figure out what the judges would like. At the end, they got to decorate ice-creams based on their designs and research. Remember back in spring, when we teamed up with LAMP to explore peer advocacy? Our Inspire group worked with them to help adapt their workshops to better suit their age group. Last Wednesday, our young people reviewed and finalised their ideas for LAMP’s peer-advocacy workshops, ready for their return this week. The young people have developed tons of peer advocacy themed activities, designed to keep young people engaged and help them learn through action, rather than watching dull powerpoints. We hope LAMP will enjoy and be able to make good use of these ideas for their workshops when training young people. We love partnering with others to grant young people new skills and experiences. Last week, our Facing the Future group marked Loneliness Awareness Week by taking time to think about the people in our community who we haven't seen in a while. The group reflected on the importance of staying connected and how small acts of kindness can make a big difference to someone's day. Last Wednesday, our Inspire group discussed what expectations they have of each other, the volunteers and the staff at FOCUS. This practice ensures everyone involved with FOCUS knows what is required of them and each other, to make the organisation a safe space for everyone. Through open and respectful conversation, they established the behaviours and responsibilities all would uphold, to ensure everyone is respected, cared-for and understood. From respecting each other's needs and ways of learning, to ensuring the music playlist is to everyone’s taste. Together, they laid down their rules and expectations lists and signed it, agreeing to abide and stand by them. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at our young people’s final preparations for the Leicester Riverside Festival last weekend. The Inspire group learned about the nitty-gritty of setting up, including coordinating how they'll make the most of our plot, and managing what they need to bring with them. They even had some final practice on setting up their stall, including the FOCUS gazebo. From the hands-on experience, they really got to understand the logistics of taking part in big community events like the Riverside Festival. Last Thursday, our Facing the Future group donated a number of sleeping bags and mats to The Bridge – Homelessness to Hope. The donation reflects the group's commitment to giving back to the local community. It was a valuable opportunity for young people to see how even small acts of kindness can make a real difference to the lives of others. We believe that strong communities are built when organisations work together and support one another. We are proud to be able to contribute to the fantastic work that local charities like The Bridge do every day to help those in need.
