Something strange was happening at Abbey Park, on Day 7 of 'FOCUS Does Summer'! FOCUS volunteer Elliot led the young people on a Stranger Things-themed scavenger hunt. Each team followed clues, cracked codes, and solved riddles to save our CEO, Matt, from the Upside Down! Each task required young people to communicate clearly, think creatively and combine their different strengths to unlock the next location and score points for their team. There were plenty of surprises along the way, as well as lots of laughter and determined problem-solving. Week 2 of the FOCUS Summer Scheme began with this year’s FOCUS Big Quiz - featuring our friends from Pepsi Co’s Beaumont Park team. Teams worked together to best each other in a series of tricky questions, with plenty of friendly competition along the way. Following the quiz, young people got the choice to either play sports games or do arts-and-crafts. The mix of activities gave everyone the chance to take part in something they enjoyed, whether that meant solving quiz questions, getting active or expressing their creativity. We wrapped up the first week of the FOCUS Summer Scheme with a Sports Day at Abbey Park. Led by FOCUS volunteer Ellie, young people took part in a range of sports and outdoor games designed for all interests and ability levels. The day gave young people another chance to strengthen the friendships and team spirit that have developed across the first week. It was brilliant to see everyone getting involved, supporting their teammates and enjoying the opportunity to be active outdoors. Teamwork was put to the test on Day 4 of the FOCUS Summer Scheme, with our young people heading to both Laser Quest and the Break Free Escape Room! Laser Quest required quick thinking, communication and strategy. While the escape rooms challenged teams to solve puzzles, search for clues and work together against the clock. There were plenty of exciting moments, surprising discoveries and opportunities for young people to take the lead. For Day 3 of ‘FOCUS Does Summer 2026’, we held our annual FOCUS Pool Tournament at Rack-N-Roll. Young people tested their accuracy, patience and decision-making skills as they competed in matches throughout the day. Additional games and activities meant that everyone could stay involved, socialise and cheer on their teammates while the tournament progressed. It was great to see good sportsmanship across the group, with young people encouraging one another, celebrating each other’s successes and handling the competitive moments positively. Day 2 of ‘FOCUS Does Summer 2026’ was the first of our 2-in-1 activity days....

‘FOCUS Does Summer 2026’ is officially underway! Day 1 kicked-off our summer scheme with a host of introductory team challenges, at the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre. This year’s group of young people got to meet the Summer Scheme staff, volunteers and their new teammates. The day gave everyone the chance to get to know one another, build confidence and begin developing the communication and teamwork skills they will use throughout the next two weeks. It was fantastic to see the teams encouraging each other, getting involved and tackling each challenge together. Welcome to our newest Focus volunteers! Over the past few weeks, our new volunteers have completed a comprehensive three-part training programme, preparing them to support this year's Summer Scheme. From safeguarding and risk assessment to team building, behaviour management and creating positive relationships with young people, they've developed the knowledge and skills needed to make a real difference. Our Facing the Future young people put their teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills to the...

For their last session before our Summer Scheme, and in light of the balmy weather the week before, our Inspire group held an ice-cream designing session. Each young person created their own ice-cream brand, with their own signature ice-cream flavour for our judges (the project staff) to try. They even designed logos, and conducted their own brand research to figure out what the judges would like. At the end, they got to decorate ice-creams based on their designs and research. From Advocacy Scenario Bingo, to a pen-sharing game designed to represent managing your own needs while supporting others, to a drawing activity that establishes boundaries - and much more! Remember back in spring, when we teamed up with LAMP to explore peer advocacy? Our Inspire group worked with them to help adapt their workshops to better suit their age group. Last Wednesday, our young people reviewed and finalised their ideas for LAMP’s peer-advocacy workshops, ready for their return this week. The young people have developed tons of peer advocacy themed activities, designed to keep young people engaged and help them learn through action, rather than watching dull powerpoints. We hope LAMP will enjoy and be able to make good use of these ideas for their workshops when training young people. We love partnering with others to grant young people new skills and experiences. Last week, our Facing the Future group marked Loneliness Awareness Week by taking time to think about the people in our community who we haven't seen in a while. The group reflected on the importance of staying connected and how small acts of kindness can make a big difference to someone's day. Together, young people created thoughtful cards filled with messages of encouragement and support, which will be sent to those who have been absent from FOCUS recently. Building strong connections and supporting one another is vital to a healthy community. Last Wednesday, our Inspire group discussed what expectations they have of each other, the volunteers and the staff at FOCUS. This practice ensures everyone involved with FOCUS knows what is required of them and each other, to make the organisation a safe space for everyone. Through open and respectful conversation, they established the behaviours and responsibilities all would uphold, to ensure everyone is respected, cared-for and understood. From respecting each other's needs and ways of learning, to ensuring the music playlist is to everyone’s taste. Together, they laid down their rules and expectations lists and signed it, agreeing to abide and stand by them. The Inspire group learned about the nitty-gritty of setting up, including coordinating how they'll make the most of our plot, and managing what they need to bring with them. Last Thursday, our Facing the Future group donated a number of sleeping bags and mats to The Bridge – Homelessness to Hope. The donation reflects the group's commitment to giving back to the local community. It was a valuable opportunity for young people to see how even small acts of kindness can make a real difference to the lives of others. We believe that strong communities are built when organisations work together and support one another. We are proud to be able to contribute to the fantastic work that local charities like The Bridge do every day to help those in need. Leicester Riverside Festival - Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 June 2026 Leicester’s biggest free arts festival is back, right in the heart of the city for a weekend bursting with music, food, arts, family fun and vibrant waterside activity. This year’s event will feature longer opening hours, a new location for the main stage and a whole host of interactive activities. FOCUS will be joining the festivities, with tons of flower-themed arts and crafts activities fitting this year’s theme of ‘Bloom’. As part of the school holidays this week, our young people took a trip to Abbey Park for a picnic and sports! From football and ball-games, to simply spending time outdoors with friends, the afternoon was full of fun and laughter! It was a great opportunity for young people from both of our projects to socialise and relax in the beautiful sunshine. A brilliant way to start the break! Last week, our Facing the Future group was joined by our CEO, Matt, who wanted their input in a funding proposal for a new project - “Lead The Change”. The proposed project focuses on tackling issues surrounding discrimination. Our young people and FtF volunteers sparked some really thoughtful conversations. Our strongest take-away was the importance of celebrating the positives that different cultures and communities bring, such as food, festivals and shared experiences. It was fantastic to see young people actively shaping ideas for future projects and having a real voice in how programmes are developed. Last week, two of our Facing the Future volunteers led a session in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month. Through activities and discussion, the group explored the importance of looking after both our mental and emotional health. The session also created a safe and supportive space for open conversations around mental health. Young people felt able to reflect on wellbeing, share experiences, and discuss ways we can support themselves and others. Last week, our Inspire group explored Diabetes Awareness with the help of a fresh perspective. One of our young people led the session, discussing with the group the challenges of living with Type 1 Diabetes. From trying to complete tasks while juggling a balloon, to using creative mapping - young people were able to visualise the daily journey of managing health. It was a powerful reminder that managing diabetes isn't just a science—it's an art. Sometimes, looking at our health through a creative lens can open up a whole new way of understanding our bodies and supporting one another. Last week, we celebrated World Art Day with a creative twist. Our Inspire group created paper portraits, using carefully cut shapes and layered colours to build bold pieces. From experimenting with colours, shapes and layering techniques, each creation reflected the unique perspective and style of each young person. It was fantastic to see ideas develop into detailed portraits. A great reminder that art isn’t limited to one medium. Sometimes stepping outside the usual approach can open up a whole new way of thinking and creating. Last week, we celebrated World Art Day with a creative twist.
Our Inspire group created...

For our final Easter holiday session, our young people headed to our Wooden Spoon Allotment. The group got stuck into a range of tasks, including planting seeds for the season ahead. They also began work on our sensory walk, adding different materials to create a space that encourages us to connect with the senses. It was fantastic to see everyone working together, enjoying the outdoors, and contributing to a shared space. A brilliant end to the Easter break. If you’ve been following our Inspire project recently, you’ll know that they’ve been working with LAMP to explore peer advocacy — what it means and how young people can support one another. Yesterday, it was time to put that learning into practice. Young people stepped into the role of leaders, sharing how they'd teach peer advocacy to others and bringing their own ideas, creativity, and experiences into the session. The ideas developed will now be used to re-write and adapt the peer advocacy workshops, ensuring they feel relevant, engaging, and accessible for other young people. This will help us reach even more people and continue to grow the impact of the project. A fantastic example of young people not just learning — but leading the way. For the Easter holidays, two of our Facing the Future volunteers led a hands-on cooking session. The group got to make a variety of sweet treats, including smoothies and chocolate nests. They even held a pancakes-making competition, decorating their pancakes to look like bunnies! It was fantastic to see everyone working together, and supporting each other in the kitchen. A big well done to our volunteers for planning and delivering such an engaging session. For the Easter holidays, two of our Facing the Future volunteers led a hands-on cooking...

As part of Easter half-term, our young people are enjoying a variety of fun games and sessions. One of these was a karaoke session, where young people, volunteers and even staff took the courage to get up and sing their hearts out! Everyone was super supportive of each other, and we had some brilliant talent amongst the group. At the end, each young person and volunteer was given an Easter egg courtesy of the Rotary Club of Leicester. Thanks again to them; the group was overjoyed. As part of Easter half-term, our young people are enjoying a variety of fun games...

Last week, our Inspire group had their final session on peer advocacy with @lampcharity, focusing on dealing with change. The young people explored how change can affect us, as well as practical ways to manage it and support others through it. It was a thoughtful and engaging discussion, building on everything they’ve learned throughout their time with LAMP. Last week, our Facing the Future group took part in a session to celebrate Neurodiversity Celebration Week, recognising and valuing the different ways people think, learn, and experience the world. The session created space for open conversations around neurodiversity, helping young people to build understanding, challenge stereotypes, and highlight the strengths that come from thinking differently. It was a positive and empowering session that reinforced the importance of inclusion, acceptance, and celebrating what makes us all unique. Last week, our Facing the Future group took part in a session to celebrate Neurodiversity...

Thanks again to @lampcharity for another brilliant session on Peer Advocacy. Last week, they and our Inspire group discussed the question: ‘Why don’t we always speak up when incidents of discrimination happen?’ The young people explored the factors that can make someone hesitant to speak up, through both a card-matching activity and by acting out different scenarios in which speaking out may feel daunting. They then created their own toolkit for safely intervening during an incident, using the approach of ‘Direct, Distract, Delegate, Delay, and Document’.
