The summer holidays: a much-anticipated and well-deserved break for young people at the end of the school year!
We at FOCUS always enjoy running exciting and entertaining summer schemes during the holidays. So we were thrilled to bring ‘FOCUS Does Summer’ to young people this year!
‘FOCUS Does Summer’ provided two weeks of free day-trips and activities, leaving young people and volunteers, new-coming and old, wanting more!
Fan-favourite activities, like our city-wide heritage Clue-Hunt and ‘Create Your Own Movie’ Day at Beaumanor Hall, returned to delight new participants. Plus, with events like our pop-quiz, and art and sports days, there was something for everyone to look forward to. At the end of the scheme, we even took the group up to Blackpool! There everyone could relax at the beach, and test their nerves on Pleasure Beach’s fun rides.
A stand-out aspect of the ‘FOCUS Does Summer’ scheme was the seamless integration of fun, learning and teamwork. Young people could be seen cheering each other on, and trying things they never thought they would. The valuable leadership-skills, communication skills, and confident-boost have left many of them excited to join our ongoing projects after the scheme ended.
Over the ten days, we supported 37 young people, as well as training 10 new volunteers! ‘FOCUS Does Summer’ demonstrated the value of offering opportunity to local young people and families, especially as the cost of living crisis tightens families’ wallets. We would like to give a massive thank you to the Heritage Lottery Fund, National Lottery Community Fund and BNI Foxes, for making it possible. Providing a free summer programme, full of wonderful memories and experiences, is truly priceless.
