Joining YAT was a bit spontaneous, I knew I wanted to get involved in something that had a positive impact on the community around me but wasn’t sure what, then I stumbled across an inspiring advertisement on the computer explaining all the things Focus does. Volunteering is often misunderstood, many are not aware of the wide spectrum of opportunities on offer and the fun that comes hand in hand with it.
Voluntary work I have done with Focus has enabled me to work with youths from a diverse group of backgrounds, helping me to understand circumstances and problems different from my own aswell as raising my social awareness and improving my communication skills as I had to adapt to each individual. I have been provided with lots of valuable training which has enabled me to be more analytical and logical in my approach to tasks thus reaching a reasoned judgement.
On a larger scale the Yat team has been able to input ideas into various areas of Focus, helping to shape the establishment and take an active role. I have volunteered in many organisations but this is by far the one that gives youths a true voice to make changes. Learning here is an ongoing process with there always being the potential to develop new and existing skills. The experiences are invaluable to not only my future profession in law but also in anything that I do. Last year it helped me to stand out from the crowd when I applied to my universities, I truly believe that this is one of the prime reasons why I was the only person selected for two top universities for law from my college.
However, don’t be mistaken it isn’t all work and no play. We’ve had the chance to stay in a luxurious london hotel, watch a west end show, go on residentials and so much more… the dedicated team of staff supporting you throughout and helping you to discover yourself on the way. Our philosophy being, work hard but play harder!
Being part of YAT has not only opened the door to endless opportunities but also given me some lifetime friends. So my advice would be try something different…live it up.
