Inspire Residentials

Purpose

These stand-alone personal development events have been the cornerstone of FOCUS' service delivery since 1988. They are aimed at individual young people, aged 13 - 17 and young people with a learning or physical disability, aged 13 – 25. They offer a powerful and unique opportunity to develop skills and self-confidence in a safe, fun and relaxed environment.

Format

In a residential setting over a period of six days and working in teams, typically comprising six to eight young people alongside four to six trained volunteers, participants undertake a series of activities that become progressively challenging. A trained facilitatior supports each team, helping them to review their learning and develop their skills. The activities available include goal setting, physical challenges, drama and creative activities, and team building exercises.

The unique feature of these events is the very high level of support available from volunteers. These volunteers are recruited from diverse sources including students, employee volunteers, former programme participants and professionals from related fields. The high level of support available ensures that each participant receives the time and attention they need to take advantage of the opportunities on offer.

Outcomes

These events focus primarily on developing self-confidence, self-belief and self-esteem. This is achieved through the exploration, identification and development of skills such as leadership, task management, problem solving, negotiation and team-working. Through the development of these skills and attributes the course aims to enable participants to play a more active and positive role in their communities. The safe environment provided by FOCUS residential projects encourages participation.
